Wingspan 37-47 mm. Flies from late April to late June in one generation A butterfly flies in 2 generations when the year’s first newly emerged adults (1st generation) bring a new “brood” (“children”) capable of flight into the world in the same year. With 3 generations there are “grandchildren” as well in the same year. The number of generations determines in how many months of the year we can see the butterfly.. Common – and seen especially where there are crucifers, the caterpillar’s foodplants. That means woodland edges and damp meadows, but also dry grassland and residential areas. Males are mostly seen roaming the plantation and the summer-house area in a hurried, bouncing flight, patrolling the ground for females. The caterpillar feeds mainly on Cuckooflower and Garlic Mustard and overwinters as a pupa.
