Wingspan 54-64 mm. One of the earliest butterflies of the year. Flies from March to October. Overwinters as an adult among dense branches and leaves. Emerges in March and gives rise to a new generation A butterfly flies in 2 generations when the year’s first newly emerged adults (1st generation) bring a new “brood” (“children”) capable of flight into the world in the same year. With 3 generations there are “grandchildren” as well in the same year. The number of generations determines in how many months of the year we can see the butterfly., which flies from July to October before going into hibernation. Roams around the plantation and the summer houses – especially in sunshine. In early spring it visits Dandelions, and later in the year Thistles and the Buddleias in the gardens. The eggs are laid on Alder Buckthorn and Buckthorn.
