Wingspan 36-52 mm. Denmark’s commonest butterfly. Flies from June to September in one long generation A butterfly flies in 2 generations when the year’s first newly emerged adults (1st generation) bring a new “brood” (“children”) capable of flight into the world in the same year. With 3 generations there are “grandchildren” as well in the same year. The number of generations determines in how many months of the year we can see the butterfly.. Flies in tall grass and is therefore seen in large numbers on the dike. Also seen in clearings in the plantation, where it visits Thistles and Brambles. The flight is slow and bouncing, close to the ground, but it can also make longer excursions, especially when disturbed. The eggs are laid on various grasses, and it overwinters as a caterpillar.
