Denmark's smallest butterfly
The Small Blue (Cupido minimus) is our smallest butterfly. Wingspan 17–25 mm; usually seen in one generation A butterfly flies in 2 generations when the year’s first newly emerged adults (1st generation) bring a new “brood” (“children”) capable of flight into the world in the same year. With 3 generations there are “grandchildren” as well in the same year. The number of generations determines in how many months of the year we can see the butterfly..
Found in most of the country except Lolland, Falster and Bornholm. Flies from mid-May to the end of July. Lives only where Kidney Vetch, the caterpillar's host plant, grows, e.g. on roadsides, in gravel pits and in dune areas.
The caterpillar overwinters among plant parts close to the ground.
