What do butterflies drink?

Although butterflies get their food mainly in liquid form as nectar from plants, they also need water, just like every other living creature. They do not need very much, and drink dew, which they can always find in the morning or in the shade.

Some butterflies can be seen sitting on damp ground, sucking up the last traces of water. These are males, which in this way take in the salts and minerals they need in order to reproduce. See more under “What do butterflies eat?”.
