How butterflies see

Butterflies are short-sighted and see well within 3–4 metres. As well as colours, they can – unlike us – see ultraviolet light. Since flowers send out ultraviolet “signals” to attract insects for pollination, the butterfly can recognise its favourite flowers in this way.

Some butterflies also have ultraviolet markings on their wings, which make them easier for other butterflies to recognise and so improve the chances of finding the right mate.
