Wingspan 25–30 mm. In Danish it is often simply called “Kløverugle” (clover owlet) or “Trolden” (the troll), because there is a troll's profile on the forewing. Flies in one generation A butterfly flies in 2 generations when the year’s first newly emerged adults (1st generation) bring a new “brood” (“children”) capable of flight into the world in the same year. With 3 generations there are “grandchildren” as well in the same year. The number of generations determines in how many months of the year we can see the butterfly. from mid-May to mid-June in both wet and dry meadows. Most often seen sitting low in the tall grass of the clearings in the plantation. The caterpillar, found in July–August, lives on clover and vetches, among other plants, and overwinters as a pupa in a cocoon of grass on or in the ground.
