In Danish it is also called “Lynspinder” (lightning moth) because of the zigzag pattern on its forewings. Wingspan 23–27 mm. A small, beautiful moth. The ground colour can vary from red to orange. Seen from June to August in the plantation and around the summer houses, where it is attracted by the garden flowers. It normally flies in one generation A butterfly flies in 2 generations when the year’s first newly emerged adults (1st generation) bring a new “brood” (“children”) capable of flight into the world in the same year. With 3 generations there are “grandchildren” as well in the same year. The number of generations determines in how many months of the year we can see the butterfly. – a sparse second generation may occur in October. The caterpillar overwinters on various lichens on tree trunks.
