Beetles are an insect group with about 3,700 Danish species – most of them very small. They almost always have more or less hard, rigid forewings – called elytra or wing cases – which close tightly over part of the back when the beetle is not flying. The hindwings are clear flight wings which, at rest, lie folded up beneath the wing cases. Like butterflies, beetles go through four stages in their life cycle: egg, larva, pupa and adult.
