Arachnids are not insects but form a group of their own, with 560 Danish species in all. And they have 8 legs – insects have 6. Some spiders catch their prey in a web (often an orb web), while others sit still and wait for it to come within reach, then run it down. Spiders lay their eggs in a silk sac or cocoon, in which they overwinter either as eggs or newly hatched. After the cocoon stage, spiders moult five to ten times before they become sexually mature
