True flies are an insect group with about 4,500 Danish species, including flies, gnats and crane flies. Insects normally have 4 wings, but in flies the hind wings have been reduced to small club-shaped organs (halteres), which whirl round in flight and help them keep their balance in the air – a kind of gyroscope. And they are superb fliers. The larvae are maggots – that is, they have no legs and are usually pale and blind.
