Wingspan 42–56 mm. Flies from June to September in one generation A butterfly flies in 2 generations when the year’s first newly emerged adults (1st generation) bring a new “brood” (“children”) capable of flight into the world in the same year. With 3 generations there are “grandchildren” as well in the same year. The number of generations determines in how many months of the year we can see the butterfly.. Common in dry, sandy places along the coast. On the dike it is seen mainly in the heather, where it sits resting with its wings closed and well camouflaged. It is usually noticed only when disturbed, when it flees restlessly and fast, low over the ground. It is most cooperative when it comes to nectar on heather and other flowers on the dike and in the summer-house gardens. The caterpillar overwinters on various grasses.
