Wingspan 34–42 mm. Common; flies from May to July. Keeps to open, sunny areas with low vegetation, e.g. meadows, dry grassland and ditch banks. It is mainly active in the evening or at night, but by day it is easily flushed from tall grass, flies a short way and settles again. Can be seen on the dike and along the edges of the plantation where the vegetation is low. The caterpillar lives from July to May, overwintering, on various low plants, including plantain, Dandelion, Field Wormwood and Yarrow.
