Wingspan 20-28 mm. Flies in 2 generation A butterfly flies in 2 generations when the year’s first newly emerged adults (1st generation) bring a new “brood” (“children”) capable of flight into the world in the same year. With 3 generations there are “grandchildren” as well in the same year. The number of generations determines in how many months of the year we can see the butterfly. from May to August. In warm summers a 3rd generation may occur. Best recognised by the chocolate-brown upperside. Wanders a great deal and prefers places where the caterpillar’s foodplants, crane’s-bills and stork’s-bills, grow in abundance. On the dike a few wandering individuals are seen in smaller numbers, taking nectar from many different flowers. The caterpillar overwinters and pupates in spring.
